A mixed bag that falls short
By Craig M Sisterson
Talented Irishwoman Alex Barclay’s third novel eschews both NYPD hero Joe Lucchesi and the violent serial killers of her first two books, instead introducing wise-cracking FBI Special Agent Ren Bryce, and a murder mystery set amongst the snowy slopes of Breckenridge, Colorado.

Bryce investigates the death of fellow FBI agent Jen Transom, whose body was found on frozen Quandary Peak before being swept away by an avalanche. As the story progresses, self-sabotaging Bryce struggles to keep her professional and personal lives separate, crosses lines in both, and risks both the case and her career.

As a crime novel, Blood Runs Cold is mixed, at best. Barclay succeeds more than fails in packing the novel with witty dialogue, but falls short elsewhere. Bryce is a somewhat intriguing protagonist, but most other characters veer closer to caricature than fully-rounded personalities. The plot often meanders, and the author seems to hurriedly introduce events and characters near the end to spur a conclusion.

Barclay does evoke a nice sense of setting amongst Colorado’s ski-bunny towns, but much of the action feels forced. A disappointing follow-up to her earlier bestsellers, this novel reads like it was rushed to print, a rewrite or more too early.

A powerful page-turner
By Frank McGrath
I've read Barclay's first two books (Darkhouse, The Caller) and always felt she had more to give as a writer - in particular with regard to the full development of her male characters. What was needed was a female lead, and now we have it. "Blood Runs Cold" does not disappoint - Ren Bryce is a rounded character - full of human foibles - alcohol being one, but we watch her grow as a person as she solves the crime. The descriptions are word perfect, and the dialogue is fine (although a lot of conversations start with "How you doing?" - think Joey from "Friends"). The bottom line for me is, how quickly did I read this book, and did I want to finish it? I read it in two days and I could not wait to get to the end.

Less convincing than Scooby Doo
By Craobh Rua
Alex Barclay was born in Dublin in 1974 and studied journalism at university. After a spell working as a fashion and beauty journalist, she quit her job to work on her debut novel, "Darkhouse". "Blood Runs Cold", first published in 2008, was her third book and introduces the FBI's Agent Ren Bryce.

Ren's first appearance in the book sees her waking up beside the toilet bowl, the morning after a heavy night on the lash. After a quick wash, she stumbles downstairs and straight into an argument with her limp and clingy boyfriend, Vincent - who, before the chapter's out, has flounced off into the sunset vowing that he won't be back. (Sadly, it's not his last appearance in the book...and, bizarrely, Ren seems reluctant to let him go).

Ren is based in Denver, working with the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force - a multi-agency team set up by Gary Dettling. When the body of another FBI Agent, Jean Transom, is found in Breckenridge, the pair are sent over to help with the investigation. Following an anonymous tip, Jean's body had been found in Quandry Park - a mountain that, since it's the coldest January in fifty years, is currently playing host to a great deal of snow. Unfortunately, a careless skier manages to start an avalanche - which swept Transom's body away as it was being examined. However, Denis Lasco (the county coroner) is pretty sure it was a murder - as he and the body were being swept away, he got a close-up view of gunshot wound.

A hugely disappointing book overall. Some of the dialogue was appalling, the plot was disjointed and incoherent and there were too many one-dimensional and unconvincing characters - Ren herself was little more than an irritation. The biggest surprise I got was discovering a follow-up had been published. Best avoided.
