No writings of Epictetus himself are really known. His discourses were transcribed and compiled by his pupil Arrian (author of the Anabasis Alexandri). The main work is The Discourses, four books of which have been preserved (out of an original eight). Arrian also compiled a popular digest, entitled the Enchiridion, or Handbook. In a preface to the Discourses, addressed to Lucius Gellius, Arrian states that "whatever I heard him say I used to write down, word for word, as best I could, endeavouring to preserve it as a memorial, for my own future use, of his way of thinking and the frankness of his speech."

~ Timeless wisdom ~

~ Epictetus was one of the first encounters I had with the inexhaustible beauty of philosophy. With his words he moved me deeply, and made me reevaluate my priorities, and my existence in general. Through his teachings I learned about life, human nature and what is and what is not in our control -and to distinguish the difference in order to avoid unnecessary suffering. Unimagined luminous new doors opened up, and unexpected options and possibilities arose before me. Epictetus teaches us about our moral responsibilities, living stoically, and not to search for happiness in outer material concerns (wealth, reputation, popularity, etc.), but to simply trust and rely in our inner strength and infinite capabilities. He also speaks about accepting our roles in this world (whichever they are), and playing such roles [since life is like a theatrical play] to the best of our abilities, instead of wasting time and energy, and increasing our own suffering, by obsessively hoping for a different role (such as a different position in life, a different partner, a different status, a different physical appearance, etc.).
I taught philosophy several years ago. One day I covered Epictetus. The following week, a student approached me. He needed to speak with me with great urgency. He explained to me that Epictetus had saved his life. He was gay (around 17 years old) and for many years had tried to stop being gay. He had resorted to therapy and other methods, but still could not stop being gay. So then he had tried to commit suicide twice, unsuccessfully (he had drank chlorine and rat poison, but had been saved by relatives in both occasions). Now he was determined to succeed. He was just about to do it, when he heard what Epictetus had to say. As my student explained it to me, he had always tried to get a different role than the one he already had -as a gay person. But Epictetus had taught him to finally accept himself, and just become the best person he could possibly be, but within his own role. He explained to me that he had never experienced any trace of happiness until that day when he took my class about Epictetus and his teachings. As he spoke, he looked radiant. A huge weight had been removed from his shoulders, and it seemed as if he had been holding his breath all this time and had finally begun to breathe normally for the first time: he could be himself at last.
I have personally benefited greatly from the invaluable instructions of this exceptional Greek thinker, but when I saw the transformation of my student in his newly found place in this world, and witness the miraculous balm of wise words cure him of his most ancient wounds, I gained an even higher level of respect and admiration for Epictetus. I will always be grateful to this outstanding philosopher that kindly continues to help us almost two thousand years after his own passing.
Indeed, Truth will set us free. ~

Was recommended this book by a stranger in a book store ...

Seriously have never been one to read. Was recommended this book by a stranger in a book store during a very dark period of my life. Read it cover to cover the same day. It helped me in more ways than one. It is a short and easy read with a remarkable message on how to achieve happiness and joy in life through self-improvement. Believe me I am not an avid reader, but if you are in a slump, please please read this.
