If I could give it 10 stars I would. Pittsburgh Area history at it's best

I could not put this book down. From Washington's battle in present day Braddock, PA, to the information on animals in the SW Pennsylvania Region in the 1700's, this book covers it all. It's 600 pages and a real steal at only .99 cents.

Good Information but a little hard to read

This is a good history book and gives lots of information about Westmoreland County of which I had no idea. To be able to learn more about Pennsylvania was, for me, really a pleasure. I have only been through Pennsylvania once briefly; and, even though my ancestors come from there, had little idea of its rich history, beyond the fact that Philadelphia was formerly the seat of the US Government. The book does mention some specific families, but mostly very briefly. It may say, for example, that Ralstons were some of the first people in that area of the county. Then it says nothing else about them, which is okay. There are more complete biographies about ministers, teachers, and a few other people given as the book discusses relevant categories of occupations, or of people captured by those people who were here before us.
There are lots of hard-to-read places because of the OCR, but it's not as bad as some I've seen. There is, for example, a picture of a man who I imagine might be Joseph Cook, but the caption under the picture reads "^/^UnM^J^^k^/yTT^i." Might be a good place to get your online passwords!! You don't have to decipher every single sentence, so it's not that bad. You can't really search on your ancestors' name since it may be split in two with a hyphen or have extraneous characters in the middle of it.
I think if you regard it as a history of the place rather than as something that will directly help with your genealogy, you might enjoy it.

Interesting, with some words not clear. My family has a presence in the county. Good to read if you are interested in this kind of history.
