From the Author
Dearest Reader,

This book was, to say the least, a journey. What began as a story I started more than ten years prior, ended with a love for characters to whom I wasn't willing to say goodbye. Alaina is as I believe heroines should be--strong,resilient, and ladylike. Of course she has a few flaws, but who doesn't.Tristan is a gentleman hero, but he's not concerned about doing what others expect, and I love him for that. I hope you enjoy Alaina and Tristan's journey of romance and mystery.

It should also be known that I write fiction, not history. My stories are meant to entertain and offer the reader an escape into another time and place. While I remain to true to the era and customs, there are times when I exercise a certain artistic license  in order to find a balance between what we believe, what was, and what we can relate to in our modern day. It is never my intention to offend the historical purists.

Why did I make a duke a British Agent when they had no occupation in the standard sense? It's quite simple. Because I saw a man who although trapped by his station in life, wanted to be known as someone and something else . . . and so he was.

Happy Reading!
-MK

A Highly Recommended and Heart Wrenching Historical
By The Bookish Dame
Readers of historical fiction and romance will absolutely eat up this first book in the Alaina Claiborne British Agent novels! It is beautifully written, intriguing, romantic and heat wrenching. The historical content is worked in well, but it's the conversational content that makes it a magical and rewarding read. MK McClintock is one to really be watching on the historical romance scene!

This one is a winner.

It broke my heart several times, the poignant moments she describes are so real.

The primary protagonists, Alaina and Tristan are gorgeous, strong and brilliant characters. Each has well-developed personalities and psychological make ups. They blend and work together beautifully as they are bent on their single goal in espionage and revenge. Their love story is so moving in McClintock's hands...not mushy but ringing so true and honest it pierces the heart.

I particularly love the strength of Alaina that MK gives her. No matter what the circumstances she encounters, she is brave and noble. It's wonderful to have a heroine of this caliber in historical romance novels. I'm looking forward to reading more about her and I hope she inspires others to continue to bring such capable women to the forefront in romance and mystery.

This is an engaging and fast-moving book to read. One you'll finish before you know it. The action is steady and swift, and the characters are beguiling and beautiful.

I highly recommend the book and look forward to the series!

5 stars for this passionate historical romance.

Great book!
By Amy (So Many Reads)
When I first started reading this story, I wasn't so sure I wanted to read it because the beginning was so sad. Opening up with such a tragedy was hard for me to overcome, but I understand that it really set the story up and was necessary. I am a wimp when reading books with sad scenes in them so I almost put it down, but figured I had to keep going to get to the heart of the story. I am sure glad I kept reading. I really enjoyed Alaina Claiborne!

Alaina experienced tragedy when she was a little girl and keeps everything locked away, and blocking the horrific event that happened. She wants to avenge her parents murder and is still trying to come up with a plan when she meets Tristan. Now that he is in her life, she starts to relive the painful memories and the nightmares start up again. However, with Tristan in her life she feels safe and happy and allows herself to relive the past.

Tristan originally meets Alaina because of the investigation he is a part of, however, it quickly turns into something personal. Neither of them can deny their attraction to one another. There is so much trust and respect between the two and I loved it. Together, with the help of Tristan's friends and fellow agents, they embark on quite an adventure to bring down criminals that the British government has been after for twenty years.

M.K. McClintock does a great job of balancing the romance and adventure in this story. I loved the characters she created and the great dialogue between them. Alaina was so strong but also knew when she was in over her head. The camaraderie between Tristan, Devon and Charles was so great and essentially Alaina inherited brothers who would protect her as if she was their sister.

I sometimes had a difficult time following the action scenes and could have used a little more detail. I had to reread some of them to make sure I followed who killed who, etc, however, it did not take away from the overall story. If you like reading historical romantic suspense books I recommend you give Alaina Claiborne a try!

This is a series that I would gladly read more of!
By Anne
I literally read this book in a day. I loved the setting and the main characters. Tristan was a courageous and heroic love interest and I adored how much he loved Alaina and that he was willing to do anything to keep her safe.

Alaina was also a worthy heroine. She was strong and equally as courageous as strong in her own way but she was also willing to submit to Tristan’s better judgement in some cases which I also liked.

The story was very strong in the beginning, but somewhere around 60% through I was thinking that there was a little too much going on. What I loved in the earlier parts of the book was the neighboring estates and the two lovers facing an unknown assailant. Where things got weird for me was when they took the boat to America. After that things just got all kinds of convoluted.

I think this story could have been just as good without the whole boat/journey sequence. It almost seemed like McClintock wanted to incorporate more ‘adventure’ to the story and thus added the America journey and some other adventure like sequences (I won’t spoil it for anyone!) and for me, I thought staying put and focusing on some of the suspense building would have worked a little better.

I also thought there were about two kidnappings too many for my taste. I think McClintock could have built the suspense up more in other ways than using a redundant plot device. I don’t think the additional kidnappings really propelled the story forward any more really and I would have liked to have seen more plot development or maybe more secondary character development since the other books in this series are about some of Tristan’s friends.

A stylistic preference, with this being a historic romance, I wanted the character names to kind of match the period and/or setting. Tristan and Alaina seemed more modern or at the very least exotic names. But at the same time, it was nice to have period main characters that weren’t the quintessential period British names like “Charles”, “James” or “Elizabeth”, “Catherine” etc. In the end, it didn’t bother me too bad, just a personal preference.

So, all that said, I thought there were enough things in the book that I loved for me to wholeheartedly give it a 4 star review. The beginning was very strongly written and the love story completely hooked me. I loved both main characters and I loved the premise of the story (spies, love, murder mystery etc). Tristan and Alaina had chemistry and their romance was believable and tender. I loved seeing them develop into something more than just neighbors.

This is a series that I would gladly read more of. I was hesitant to commit to reviewing the entire series, but now I am excited to read the second book! They are quick and easy reads with wonderfully written romance and intriguing characters! Sign me up for more of this series!
