In this personal tour Anissa introduces the stunning food of Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, Palestine and Jordan. She draws them together through the themes of family, farm, souks (markets), restaurants, bakeries and the sweetmakers and attempts to record the food traditions of countries that are changing beyond recognition and at risk of disappearing.

ANISSA HELOU (anissas.com) is a food writer, journalist, broadcaster and blogger. Born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, and Mashta el-Helou, Syria, she knows the Mediterranean as only a well-travelled native can. Ms. Helou is the author of numerous award-winning cookbooks including The Fifth Quarter, An Offal Cookbook; Modern Mezze; Savory Baking from the Mediterranean; Mediterranean Street Food; Cafe Morocco; and Lebanese Cuisine, which was a finalist for the prestigious Andre Simon awards and chosen as one of the Los Angeles Times' favourite books. Anissa has just launched Koshari Street (kosharistreet.com), an Egyptian inspired street food experience, in London and plans to launch others very soon.

Anissa Helou achieved it again, a beautiful text with all her sensibility to edible things, her sense of humour and the elegance of her prose, plus many recipes that work. I bought the book in the kindle version, because it's easy to carry around, but want to have the printed one too, to browse at night and dream of the Lebanon (mainly) she describes.

Comprehensive, soulful, artful presentation of recipes and memories!

This is an astonishingly comprehensive, soulful and artful presentation of both recipes and memories, from a part of the world that seemingly continues to suffer everything but art, and where there seems to be an intention to contaminate even art with politics, (which Yotam Ottolenghi of "Jerusalem" fame classifies as "sad"). It also is very candid and full of humor!
I ordered this book to add to my large collection of international cookbooks, which includes others by Helou. I value ALL of them. Photos are nice but not essential to my needs. The inclusion or exclusion of various countries, I find, does not necessarily indicate a particular "political" stance or other. I am absolutely hooked on the stories she tells in such picturesque language, as introductions to most recipes! And, I am not surprised that someone of her age and background may likely not HAVE any "memories"of her family visiting Israel, for example, and therefore, no recipes.
According both to Claudia Roden and Yotam Ottolenghi, together with Wikipedia, Israel has a "fusion cuisine" which comes from all over the world (including from Palestine), and which is constantly evolving! Besides, if you read Helou's stated purpose in writing this particular book, while affording her some degree of charitable benefit, you come to understand her sorrow that accompanies the potential loss of her beloved culture through wars and other destruction continuing throughout the Middle East.
I cannot recommend this book more highly, and I regret that anyone passes on its' purchase as a result of an apparent we / them mentality, because Levant is a real jewel, "a treasure trove" to quote Yotam Ottolenghi!
