"I used to wear these clothes to my last office because, you know, publishing's quite a laid-back environment. But I notice people here dress more formally and I saw you looking at me before and I wondered..."

The way she was responding to him was out of control. She could feel her color rising and she was starting to feel wet between her legs as unbidden images of what she wanted him to do to her sprang into her mind.

Great training resource

I have been playing some chess and wanted to take my game to a higher level. This book is giving the tools to do that, and to learn to take it even higher. This is an amazing method of training to learn tactic chess. I love the characteristics of the board design and the buttons. The way it works interactively with the kindle makes learning lots easier and more lifelike. I love that the author has included the best games from Magnus Carlsen also. I look forward to playing much better chess after studying with this book.

I like this book and I think that it's quite beneficial to improve your tactics skills in chess. Although it could be more annotated in my opinion. I think that there are more key moments in Carlsen's games which are crucial and are not analyzed by the author.

A Toast to Love

EVAN!!!!!!!!!! Boom... Now that I've got that out of the way, let me tell you about Melissa Brown's Champagne Toast. I was introduced into Melissa Brown's world of writing when I found a hidden gem of a book called Bouquet Toss. Little did I know how much my reading world would be rocked. So needless to say, I was freakin' giddy like a school- girl when I found out there would be another book following Bouquet Toss. I remember messaging Ms. Brown, telling her how much I enjoyed Evan's character in Bouquet Toss. And he was a secondary character. I absolutely love his kindness, his openness and his sincerity. What I liked most about his character was that he was more realistic in that he wasn't an unattainable man. He wasn't fantasy gorgeous, he wasn't the bad boy that you will forever chase and never get. He wasn't intimidating with his sexiness. He was just Evan. Someone attractive in every way. Someone who melts your heart and just makes you feel good all over.
Champagne Toast is Evan's story. Evan and Kate. It is told from both characters point of views as well as recalling the past and living in the present. For this story, the varying POV's and timestamps worked really well in giving us a definite and vivid idea of where the characters were coming from and where they might be headed to.
Melissa Brown writes stories that warm your heart and make you believe in the beauty of love. There is nothing raunchy or dirty about her stories. I love that they just fill your heart and soul with sunshine. I love that she can put a lump in your throat and make a tear fall down your cheek. I love that you just feel content when you read one of her books. She writes stories that you don't expect would elicit the feelings or emotions that arise. Her books are thoughtful and sincere.
I would recommend Melissa's books to anyone looking for a wonderful love story. If Champagne Toast is on your TBR- bump it up. And if not, get on it.

Prepare to fall in love with Kate and Evan!

It didn't take me long to sink myself into Champagne Toast.

Evan and Kate's story spans over a the years. I'm normally not a fan of past and present, but it worked so well with Champagne Toast. I was able to see how they fell in love, what attracted them to each other! The present shows where their mistakes have lead them, and how sometimes what we think is true, isn't always the truth.

I highly recommend this book!

Angst is definitely the name of the game where this book's concerned. Told from alternating points of view, this is the story of Kate and Evan. Its lights out, love at first sight for these two college kids when Evan comes to interview for a job at the bar where Kate works. It's not your everyday, "I think you're aces" kind of love. It's the kind of love that makes you protect your heart because if that love ever left, you'd be shattered.

Kate has issues. Issues with her difficult parents who want her to fit into a slot that just doesn't feel right. Issues with her own self worth and a dating history she'd rather forget. Evan, seemingly issue free at the start of the book, wants to help her learn to believe in herself and move forward but that proves to be easier said then done. Kate starts to open up and shares something that's occurred in every one of her past relationships, thinking Evan would appreciate the honesty. Unfortunately Kate's honesty comes back to bite her. As much as Evan loves Kate, there's now a little part of him that doesn't fully trust her. Add in Evan graduating and moving forward career wise, Kate's feelings of inadequacy and both of them trying desperately to protect their hearts and you have a recipe for disaster.

"You were never good enough for him." Poor Kate.

This is a story about coming back together as much as it is about being in love and in a relationship. Both Evan and Kate had a lot of growing to do before they could make the relationship work, but their love for each other was never in doubt. As sometimes emotional as this book was, it was also funny and real. The author did an incredibly realistic job of telling this story from both sides and while my heart broke more for one of the characters in particular, I got why the relationship went down the way it did. My only issue was what I perceive as the too tidy ending. That's a whole lot of drama to be wrapped up the way it eventually was.

If you don't feel like riding an emotional rollercoaster, this book may not be your thing. I was in the mood for some drama and it worked for me in a big way.

Unexpectedly clever mystery novella

The Single Staircase is the first installment of the “Owl and Raccoon” novella series by Matt Ingwalson. It follows the investigation of a missing three-month-old girl in the style of a locked room mystery.

Owl and Raccoon are two Missing Persons detectives, and their given nicknames match their personalities; Owl is observant, critical, and solemn in his nature, while Raccoon is fast-acting and agile, often burning the midnight oil to pursue a lead. Of the two, I feel that more was revealed about Owl’s character, since he often led the discussions about the investigation and ultimately comes out as the stronger of the two detectives, in part due to his seniority. I’d like to have learned more about Raccoon to have a balanced opinion of both, but the series is still young and the sequel has already been released, hopefully providing deeper insight into these two main characters.

The plot is clearly well-thought-out, and I was pleased when the ending came as a surprise for me. Enough is revealed to give the reader a chance to puzzle it out, but the clues lend themselves to varying interpretations, making this reasoning exercise a full-blown workout.

As for pacing, the story flows along solidly enough, though some details were a little off at points. For instance, the story starts off in the early hours of the morning (the sun is just coming out and spreading its light across the sky), but when the detectives put their hands against the hood of a car to test it for warmth, it’s hard to determine because “it was summertime, hot outside, hot in the garage”. That early in the morning, there shouldn’t be enough heat indoors to be throwing off their hands from sensing recent use from the car engine. This a minor issue, of course, but it made me doubt the apparent omniscience of the narrator.

A larger pacing issue would be the multitude of chapters and the abbreviated nature with which events and details were related to the reader. Sometimes, the chapter split would be made to highlight an important or interesting detail (good!), but other times the creation of a new chapter seemed wholly unnecessary (not so good). These breaks provided some easy suspense in a mystery book with relatively few pages, but one chapter in particular was only two lines long. I laughed at the joke it contained, but then I winced, because that was one less “page” of story in an already short book. Truncated in a similar way to the chapters, the narration could also have benefited from more details to really place the reader into the setting of the story. The short, terse sentences fit well with the gruff mannerisms of the detectives, but they proved distancing when trying to engage my imagination. It felt like the story was whisking along at the pace of a runaway train, rarely pausing to let the reader absorb the details that were being given to them.

However, this changes partway through the book. I don’t know what caused the shift, but I noticed the sentences becoming more developed (and the ideas along with them) as the story transitioned into its climax and denouement. The latter half of the book, supported by the details flung throughout the first half, stood on much stronger legs. What started as a patchy and perplexing abduction/murder mystery turned into an engaging investigation as more avenues of explanation were exhausted.

I would have liked more depth from some of the periphery characters, but the abbreviated nature of their development was endearing at the same time. The level of knowledge we’re given is roughly akin to the actual level of knowledge you might have of someone after a few days of being their acquaintance, and their development reminded me of single-episode television characters unfolding on the screen.

As one reviewer noted, there are several instances of foul language here, and the dialogue is probably one of the weaker points of the novella. With so few pages to work with, some revelations came a little too easily, and the characters would sometimes switch from serene to severe in a matter of seconds. The low reading level of the novella is also at odds with its content and sometimes-harsh language; for those reasons, while a fifth-grader could pretty easily read the whole thing, I couldn’t recommend this book to a fifth-grader.

Finally, there are a few technical issues (a missing period here, a misplaced apostrophe there), but none of these would pull a reader out of the book.

Overall, I was pleased I got to read this. It was a good mental exercise and an easy read to accomplish in one sitting, delivering a fruitful way to spend the morning. The story will keep you guessing until the end, and the detectives are clever enough that I would read their next case.

Amazing Mystery!

I had the great pleasure of reading The Single Staircase. As soon as I purchased it...I couldn't put it down. I've read a lot of mysteries and can usually figure out the ending, but this was completely well thought out, intelligent and took me by surprise. It has everything you would ever want in a good mystery including well drawn characters, twists, turns, and great dialogue. I can't recommend this book enough, I totally loved it and can't wait to read more from this exciting author.

~ Timeless wisdom ~

~ Epictetus was one of the first encounters I had with the inexhaustible beauty of philosophy. With his words he moved me deeply, and made me reevaluate my priorities, and my existence in general. Through his teachings I learned about life, human nature and what is and what is not in our control -and to distinguish the difference in order to avoid unnecessary suffering. Unimagined luminous new doors opened up, and unexpected options and possibilities arose before me. Epictetus teaches us about our moral responsibilities, living stoically, and not to search for happiness in outer material concerns (wealth, reputation, popularity, etc.), but to simply trust and rely in our inner strength and infinite capabilities. He also speaks about accepting our roles in this world (whichever they are), and playing such roles [since life is like a theatrical play] to the best of our abilities, instead of wasting time and energy, and increasing our own suffering, by obsessively hoping for a different role (such as a different position in life, a different partner, a different status, a different physical appearance, etc.).

I taught philosophy several years ago. One day I covered Epictetus. The following week, a student approached me. He needed to speak with me with great urgency. He explained to me that Epictetus had saved his life. He was gay (around 17 years old) and for many years had tried to stop being gay. He had resorted to therapy and other methods, but still could not stop being gay. So then he had tried to commit suicide twice, unsuccessfully (he had drank chlorine and rat poison, but had been saved by relatives in both occasions). Now he was determined to succeed. He was just about to do it, when he heard what Epictetus had to say. As my student explained it to me, he had always tried to get a different role than the one he already had -as a gay person. But Epictetus had taught him to finally accept himself, and just become the best person he could possibly be, but within his own role. He explained to me that he had never experienced any trace of happiness until that day when he took my class about Epictetus and his teachings. As he spoke, he looked radiant. A huge weight had been removed from his shoulders, and it seemed as if he had been holding his breath all this time and had finally begun to breathe normally for the first time: he could be himself at last.

I have personally benefited greatly from the invaluable instructions of this exceptional Greek thinker, but when I saw the transformation of my student in his newly found place in this world, and witness the miraculous balm of wise words cure him of his most ancient wounds, I gained an even higher level of respect and admiration for Epictetus. I will always be grateful to this outstanding philosopher that kindly continues to help us almost two thousand years after his own passing.

Indeed, Truth will set us free. ~

Seriously have never been one to read. Was recommended this book by a stranger in a book store during a very dark period of my life. Read it cover to cover the same day. It helped me in more ways than one. It is a short and easy read with a remarkable message on how to achieve happiness and joy in life through self-improvement. Believe me I am not an avid reader, but if you are in a slump, please please read this.
