A must read

I think I've probably read all of Karin Slaughter's Grant County and Will Trent novels, and I felt that Unseen was yet another example of Slaughter's uncanny ability to create true breath taking suspense and combine it with characters that are as unique and as vivid as any you will find in fiction. I find myself getting tired of most series as the characters grow stale, plot lines become repetitive and dialogue starts sounding tired, but these characters are consistently growing, changing and heading off in new directions. I don't always like these people, but I always find them interesting. The author's perceptive insights into motivations and her crystal clear view of the underside of society make this a series I will keep coming back to as the author continues to deliver time and again.

My one problem with this novel was in the plot structure, as a portion of the story was told in flashback. I did not find this enjoyable, however it is most likely a testament to how invested I was in the book that flashing back led me to fits of screaming frustration. The author takes you to the very edge and then makes you wait for it. The suspense is maddening and enjoyable and frustratingly real.

So much of this story centers on Lena Adams, something I initially did not appreciate. I have never enjoyed this character, who seems to spend so much time wrapped up in her own head that reading about her can sometimes begin to feel claustrophobic. Once again, however, the author surprised me by taking this character to a place I never expected. Unseen is a must read for any fan of the Will Trent series. If you are new to the works of Karin Slaughter, you are in for a treat. You have just found your new favorite author.

Love Slaughters books

I've loved the Will Trent books, this one was no different. I have in the past been able to guess the "bad guy" but not this time. Plus I actually really like Will and Sara together, at first it was tough because I loved her and Jeffery but Sara needed to move on and I'm happy it's with him. He's such an endearing and intriguing character. Sara is just impressive, and strong and I love her character as well. Even Lena whom I've gone back and forth with has grown a little more on me. I'm sad I only have one more book left in the series!

Her first books were great, interesting and exciting. Now they are just dull. The characters jump around and it's hard to keep up with her storyline. Unseen was no exception. She needs to stay with one plot until it has gotten established.

Firsthand account of Culture Shock

I enjoyed reading this book and could sympathize in a great deal, because as an international dweller, myself have been through similar experiences, however, inter-continentally. This book clearly shows physical distance wouldn't be the first factor which 'shocks' new comers, rather language, system and culture. The author must have gone through a lot: excitement, anticipation, trials and errors, disappointment, despair, and yet found good friendship and most importantly her courage to choose what's good for her. It's quite intriguing the way she perceives difficulties/hardships as matter-of-fact and describes them amusingly, not taking them personally. Also it's amazing she has a never-giving-in spirit to try out many different things to adapt to the new country. On top of that, this book also contains lots of insiders' tips and introductions to little places in Switzerland, which is hardly found in tourist guide books.

I wanted to like this, but I just couldn't.

As an expat myself, I was hoping to learn more about the experience of someone on the French side of Switzerland. I was quite disappointed to find that this is mainly just a long list of examples illustrating how much Ms Malcom did not enjoy the experience. Fair enough, she certainly didn't have to enjoy it, but it does make this an incredibly negative read, lacking in any humor.

I also had the feeling the author wasn't totally sure which aspects of the expat experience and/or Lausanne she was trying to emphasize, which made for an uneven reading experience. I think this could have been interesting as a more in-depth study of what it's like to be the spouse who follows another to a foreign country, perhaps. As a comment on Lausanne or Switzerland, or even just a comment on the real the reasons behind Ms Malcom's unhappiness, I did not find it particularly helpful or engaging.

Depressing and soulless read

This book describes how a Scottish woman follows her husband to Lausanne in Switzerland, fails to perfect her French, fails to find a role for herself so becomes dependent on her husband, starts to focus on negatives despite trying to fit in to the new culture, borders on depression and packs up and goes home.
And that's essentially it.
In the bio she mentions she wrote comedy, but there is no funny observations, no joie de vivre. She sits alone in French movies not following what's being said eating popcorn. Her descent into depression is banged out in short chapters with no witty asides, no clever observations just bland recollections of what she did.
Having lived in a foreign country as an expat I can readily relate to the blind panic of phone conversations in a foreign language not mastered, and I imagine Swiss culture for a childless middle aged woman is extremely tough with no family or work colleagues... but... A book has to transcend and elevate, through humor or witty observations, it shouldn't read like something a sullen teenager was forced to write to describe an unhappy experience.

The highlight of this book was the title, from there on it went downhill rapidly.
The one eye-opening revelation I did get from this was anyone can write and get a book published. The bar is so low as this book shows that despite buying it to get an insight into Swiss life I now know one day I will write a book for sure, and for that alone I am eternally grateful.
Finally I would say that this book had an average review rating of 4 stars while Swiss Watching by Diccon Bewes (which I read just before reading this book) had a average rating of 4.5 is an absolute travesty. This book doesn't deserve to grace the same library as the Bewes book, let alone the same bookshelf.

Creative Yet Hard To Follow

The story seems to be very creative but I had a hard time maintaining interest. I found it hard to follow.

Minor spoilers***
The story starts with a section on author Philip K Dick, then seems to be about an editor and a young man who submits short stories, then we follow our protagonist as he awakens next to a dead body who's murder is going to be pinned on him. He gets a call telling him how to escape (just like when Mr. Anderson got a similar call in The Matrix) and he just does it. I swear, one sentence was dedicated to his escape and I found it hard to get excited over what could have been a tense scene but was ultimately glossed over. Then we learn about the Order of the Goldfish, who send assassins after our hero,... and that's around the time I decided I had enough.

In addition whenever the protagonist reads a letter or does online research the text is displayed in super tiny font. I think many readers will have to zoom in on these section, then zoom out when the normal text size resumes.

I suggest potential readers should click on the cover and check out the sample. I personally found the story too hard to follow and too incoherent to recommend.

Interesting piece of Church history

As a lay person I am interested in how the church developed its understanding of biblical teachings over time. On First Principles is an interesting read because it shows the beginning of the first modern style of interpretation. Origen's "proofs" are not always convincing to a modern reader but he is systematic in his approach.

Brilliant Theology from the Early Days

Reading Origen provides Christians a unique opportunity to experience the mind of an early theologian at work - before the doctrinal path had been completely established. Studying Origen prompts the reader to reflect on basics of Christianity as those basics were understood in the first centuries of the Church. "Sitting" next to the first great theologian forces a reader to reflect deeper on beliefs that perhaps were previously taken for granted. The works of Origen are enjoying well-deserved renewed appreciation among today's theologians - you, too, may appreciate the exposure.

"Nothing new under the sun" they say, and this, surprisingly shows early [3rd Cent, BCE] Christian belief taking hold among those who studied the scriptures carefully, then wrote about it [they started keeping this information for posterity]. Origen writes so it is understood, even by us laity, and reinforces what we have been led [correctly] to believe. Though I haven't delved into Book IV yet, I can still recommend this highly.

Stand up to your company's CFO

I don't usually write reviews but thought I should here as a public service to people like me who get bullied by smug CFOs. If you are like me, you don't spend your time reading financial books. If you do, I wouldn't recommend this book to you. I mean I think the book is good but you'd probably think it was beneath you. This book is meant for people who don't work in a "finance" job, however, who want to know their way around a spreadsheet as necessary. This book has definitely helped me talk my way around my company's financial reports and it could yours as well.

I'm too busy working to spend my day analyzing spreadsheets and financial reports. Yet, I'm responsible for delivering the numbers that my boss wants on a few key financial measures. Sometimes I don't always hit my monthly P&L numbers and that's when the information I learned in this book becomes the most valuable. After reading the book I know enough about financial reports to sound intelligent. When the CFO and my boss conduct their monthly review of my key benchmarks, they always seem to focus on the number in the spreadsheet that fell short of their expectations. I used to sweat these monthly meetings, but now I can point out other numbers in the income statement and balance sheet that influence my benchmark.

I read the first edition of this book after receiving it at a company seminar. I just finished this updated version after loading it onto my Kindle. The most recent book added new material about the recent financial crises and expanded upon accounting literacy to include in-depth review of some new financial reports. I liked it. Must read for all employees at all levels...

i don't normally write reviews but i have to say this is the best financial book i've ever read...i have spent the past 15 or so years at the coo level with finance reporting to me...and while i'm financially savvy, i have no formal financial education...i'm a believer that finance, like any profession or industry, gets bogged down in its own set of acronyms and language...that in and of itself creates the silos too often found in organizations...sales has it, marketing has it, hr has it, etc...etc...

i always try to break down barriers and most of my time is spent as a translator...truth be told, i've always struggled with translating the financial lingo...this book did it for me and has helped me paint a picture and tell the story behind it so everyone understands...

Finance Can be Fun

Berman and Knight have done the impossible -- make the topic of finance clear, interesting, even fun! Finance is not one of my favorite topics. I typically nod off when engaged in finance-related conversations or sitting in yet another, interminable budget meeting. But I actually found myself looking forward to picking up this book whenever I had time to read for yet another discussion of balance sheets, profitability ratios, and yes, my personal favorite, EBITs.

Their explanations are clear, their ripped-from-the-headlines examples are relevant and compelling, and their writing style is lively. Their frequent playful and humorous asides help to humanize the material.

There are many helpful features in this book. One of my favorites is the embedded glossary - i.e., definitions that appear in a box on the page where the expressions are first used rather than at the end, requiring the reader to flip back and forth and risk losing their concentration. The toolbox at the end of each Part that gives the reader a hands-on opportunity to try out the concepts they have just learned is also helpful.

In addition, I appreciated their emphasis on finance as art not science, subject to assumptions, biases, even manipulation and fraud. I guess I knew that, but I didn't realize just how subjective it can be. And their discussion of the difference between cash and profit and the relationship between the two was especially lucid, lifting the fog that usually accompanies my attempts to understand, and most important, apply this concept.

This book is a must read for any manager. Armed with this book, they can make better financial decisions and more effectively manage their people, technology and resources. Perhaps most important, they might even stay awake during those interminably boring budget meetings and possibly even influence the discussions and outcomes.

About the Author
Dr. Alpern has performed research in the area of epithelial physiology, focusing on the mechanisms and regulation of acid transport. He received his MD degree from the University of Chicago and then trained in Internal Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian. Following postdoctoral training in the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California, San Francisco, Alpern joined the faculty at UCSF, then moved to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School as Chief of Nephrology and later Dean of the medical school. He is now Dean of Yale School of Medicine and Ensign Professor.

Dr. Caplan studies epithelial cell biology and physiology. His work focuses on the trafficking and regulation of renal ion transport proteins. His group also studies the signaling pathways involved in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease. He received his MD and PhD degrees from Yale University, having pursued his dissertation work in the Department of Cell Biology under the guidance of Drs. James D. Jamieson and George E. Palade. Following postdoctoral work in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Yale, Caplan joined that department as a faculty member. He is currently the C.N.H. Long Professor and Chair of Yale University School of Medicine’s Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology.

Dr. Moe received his medical degree from the University of Toronto where he also did his internal medicine residency and clinical nephrology fellowship. Orson Moe moved to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center for research training in renal physiology. He is currently Professor of Internal Medicine and Physiology and is a member of the Nephrology Division at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He is also the Director of the Charles and Jane Pak Center of Mineral Metabolism and Clinical Research and holds the Charles and Jane Pak Chair in Mineral Metabolism Research and the Donald Seldin Professorship in Clinical Investigation. Orson Moe conducts both basic science and patient-oriented research on renal physiology and metabolism, and epithelial biology.
