Step Into A World
By Lloyd Tackitt
I have become a big fan of Ben Stevens. He writes extremely well in several genres, this one is historical fiction. I've read two other of his books and they are as different from this as they possibly can be, yet his writing skill isn't challenged by the change ups. Just like his other two books I've given this one five stars - this one for a gripping and gritty read.

He changes past to present seamlessly as he begins the story in the present tense and then moves back to a darker, much darker, past. Most writes struggle with moving back and forth in time, but not Mr. Stevens. This story weaves in and out of the past and present in a smooth flow.

A somewhat elderly concert violinist is in his dressing room contemplating a performance he is about to give while a mysterious and evil man waits in the audience. Then we're back in time, back in Berlin as the Jews are being disappeared into death camps. Our protagonist is half Jewish but because of his unique and beautiful skill with the violin has an uneasy pass at being disappeared - or does he?

Unlikely heros populate this book, ordinary people that are driven to the edge of insanity by the Nazis. A beautiful woman, a love story, a horrific set of villains, acts of incredible caring and bravery, and a man that refuses to cave in to the pressures that surround him create a world that our protagonist progresses through as it bends and tears at his soul. An evil man that for selfish reasons does one thing right, but only one, and not out of kindness.

Historic fiction isn't my normal reading genre, but this one, this one was well worth the read. Be warned, the ending won't be what you think it will be, it's better...far better.

Good Thriller in a Classic Genre
By Stephanie De Pue
THE WHISTLER: A MURDERERS TALE, by Ben Stevens is a novelette-length historical mystery/thriller that tells of Kurt Schmidt, a psychotic pitiless killer and Erich Heinemann, a brilliant, famed half-Jewish violinist, and their nearly lifelong, yet obscure relationship with each other. It is set largely in the turbulent, fraught pre-World War II days of 1930s Berlin, Germany, and during the dark, disturbing days of World War II, with brief modern introduction and postscript.

The book opens in the current day as the mysterious, evil Stern waits in a London audience to hear a rare European concert by Heinemann, now an elderly American citizen who no longer works frequently in Europe. Stevens does very well with this material: his research must have been extensive. He populates this book with an interesting cast of characters, a beautiful woman, a love story, some unlikely heroes. He gives us a flavorful, atmospheric, detailed look at the ferment of Berlin, a great city if ever there was one, and perhaps a more generic, though still strongly detailed look at Nazi Germany’s horrendous solution to what it considered the “Jewish problem,” particularly its notorious concentration camp Auschwitz. He moves easily between eras, keeps his plot tight and ticking along, and arrives at an ending I never saw coming. His writing is also, quite simply, very good, narrative, dialog, description are fine, although the book could use better copyediting.

The writer has produced mainly nonfiction: frankly, the strength and power of THE WHISTLER pleasantly surprised me. Stevens, who is originally from southwest London, Great Britain, has been living in Japan for three years: He's been working as a gardener/janitor/handyman at a big, ancient Buddhist temple, called "Daionji," located in Nagasaki City. The author, who has specialized in Japanese material, has used his experiences working at the temple to write BUDDHA'S BREAKFAST: LIFE AT A JAPANESE TEMPLE, which I have read and reviewed in these pages, also Big Sound Temple. The author has published a book of short stories, The Maneater: A Tale of Revenge, and a novelette, Kamikaze: The Story of a Suicide Pilot. He has had two books published by HarperCollins, Gaijin's Guide to Japan, ("Gaijin" being the colloquial Japanese term for western foreigners), and From Lee to Li, about famous martial artists.

This is a surprise, out-of-left field entry in a fairly classic popular genre, pre-WWII and WWII Germany, but it’s a good one. Recommended.

A great read! The character development is crafty done
By Maggie
A great read! The character development is crafty done, building to the twist at the end that only makes sense after a lot of thought. It was hard to read the end....poignant.
