great little novel

Just like other reviewers I could not put this book down! Cricket is a 16 year old girl who takes a tour guide job at the famous old Chartwell house in the heart of Savannah. She is not your typical teen as,just like her mom,she is able to feel and see ghosts. Soon, she begans to have visions of a young ghost who desperately tries to get her attention. Chartwell house harbors a terrible secret... the book is very well written and will mesmerize as soon as you read the first pages. It gives beautiful and vivid descriptions of old Savannah and the southern charm of its inhabitants,and you cannot help but wish you were there strolling along the squares.Chilling at times, romantic, witty and funny at other times, this is a great read for the adventurous soul. What I really enjoyed is that it had just the right amount of everything a mystery book should have and it makes it attractive to adults and teenagers alike. I hope that the author writes another one like this.Well done!

I loved this story. It is the kind of book that makes you think about it when you are not even reading it. It is filled with Savannah history.

I live about 3 hours from Savannah and can not wait to visit and do an architectural tour to do the ghost tours.

Parson's Green a Delight

Even for those who don't normally like ghosts, or ghost stories, this is a delightful romp through time unraveling a 200+ year-old mystery. Bagley does a great job of wandering from present day to the late 1700s without disrupting the storyline, managing the delicate complexity of whirlwind teenage relationships at multiple levels with dexterity, and bringing to life some wonderful characters. I hope to see more of Cricket, Claudia, Linus Blackton and Mrs. Vanderbilt again in the near future - they make a marvelous cast. I look forward to seeing Ms. Bagley's next offering.

About the Author

Mary Bell has spent more than twenty years traveling around the country demonstrating food dehydrators and food drying techniques. When not on the road, she divides her time between Madison, Wisconsin, and Lanesboro, Minnesota, where she and her husband work at the Forest Resource Center, an environmental education facility. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and holds a master's degree from Saint Mary's College.

An editor at Gourmet Magazine for over 10 years, Evie Righter wrote the text to Gourmet's Menus for Contemporary Living. She has worked on books by many of the greatest talents in the world of food, including Alice Waters, Ann Willan, Michél Guéard, and Wolfgang Puck.

The "bible" for dehydrating foods.

If you have a food dehydrator collecting dust somewhere, get this book and haul it out!
This is the best basic book I've seen for preserving foods through dehydration. Not only does she tell you what you need to do *before* you dry it, but she tells you what you can do with the stuff after it's dried. Recipes that are useable, recipes for camping, and some that will surprise you - this is a very comprehensive book.
This is a must-have for backpackers who want every ounce to count, since dried foods weigh so little. A must for parents who read the "Fruit Roll-ups" label in horror: make your own fruit leathers! She'll tell you how to make fantastic beef jerky, too.
If you dry foods, you need this book.

I've had my dehydrator for 5 years and thought I'd dried everything in every conceivable way but Mary Bell has some fantastic ideas. Easy read and easier recipes. Especially liked the section on backpacker food. My dehydrator has been running 24hrs/day since I got this book. Thank you, Mary Bell, for this great book.

Well-written, valuable food drying resource!

Mary Bell's years of experience dehydrating food really shows up in this comprehensive book. The book is interesting reading as well as practical. Mary tells you how to dry the different kinds of foods then continues the discussion with recipes and other ways to use your dried produce.
I had been hoping to find out how to dry dairy products such as cheddar cheese and eggs. I will say I was disappointed to find out that there is not much you can do at home to dry dairy products. I tried drying Cheddar cheese shreds, anyway. Seemed like a good idea at the time. What a mistake! I was peeling that greesy, clumpy stuff from my trays for 45 minutes. Thank goodness I only 'tested' 2 trays worth!! I guess if Mary says "Don't do it", from now on I won't.
There are many, many items which will dry successfully and just as many variations which you can try out. This book leads you through the process and offers helpful tips and hints along the way. I feel I received very good value for the modest price.

MacLean had doors slammed in his face, guns pulled on him, and was bitten by a dog. Eventually, he won over the closed community of Skidmore, Mo. The inhabitants shared with him the reign of terror Ken Rex McElroy inflicted for twenty years in Northwest Missouri, and information about his murder on the main street of Skidmore in 1981. Despite 45 witnesses, the case remains unsolved. MacLean tells the story in his book “In Broad Daylight,” first published in 1988.

“The Story Behind 'In Broad Daylight'” brings the book up to date and includes several previously unpublished pictures. It also answers many questions about the killing itself, such as who was involved, and what has become of them. The author discusses the nature of the moral consequences of the killing for the town and those involved in the killing. MacLean describes the breakthrough events when key characters agreed to speak with him, and he realized he would finally get the story.

About the Author
Harry MacLean had a successful career as a lawyer before turning to writing. MacLean graduated from Lawrence University with a degree in psychology. He then attended the University of Denver College of Law, from which he graduated magna cum laude in 1967. He went to work as a trial attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. He returned to private practice in Denver and accepted an adjunct professor position at the DU College of Law. He was appointed magistrate in the Denver juvenile court, where he served for two years, before becoming First Assistant Attorney General for the Colorado Department of Law. From there, he went to Washington, D.C. as the General Counsel of the Peace Corps in the Carter administration. Harry returned to Denver in 1980 and was working as an independent arbitrator and mediator when he read the story of the “vigilante killing” of Ken Rex McElroy, the “town bully,” in northwest Missouri. After reading what he could find on the murder, he drove to the small town of Skidmore, and found the town wrapped up tight around the killers. Over time, MacLean made friends and became accepted in the community. He lived with a prominent Skidmore family, and for the next four years researched the story. “In Broad Daylight” is the tale of McElroy’s reign of terror, his murder, and the ensuing cover up. The book won an Edgar Award, was a New York Times bestseller for twelve weeks, and was made into a movie starring Brian Dennehey, Chris Cooper, Marcia Gay Harden and Cloris Leachman. “Once Upon A Time” is the story of Eileen Franklin, a California housewife who claimed to recover a repressed memory of her father murdering her playmate twenty years earlier. Based solely on this memory, George Franklin was tried and convicted of the murder. The book chronicles the trial and the story of the highly dysfunctional Franklin family as it played out in court. It also explores the intersection of psychology and the law and the use of repressed memories as evidence in criminal cases. “Once Upon A Time” was selected as a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times. Harry has long been interested in the state of Mississippi as the supposed unrepentant heart of the old South. Compelling

Years later it is still hard to believe the facts of the case of Ken McElory and his reign of terror in Skidmore, MIssouri. It is also hard to believe how Harry MacLean was able to get the people involved to tell the story when law enforcement struck out. Stamina is all I can figure out. It took years of patient, persistent doggedness to get the story. Harry MacLean's narative of digging out the story is as compelling as the story itself.

I was captivated by Harry's ability to quietly become one within the community. Like most small, somewhat isolated, rural communities there's an unwritten code against outsiders. Skidmore and the area surrounding it is no different. Being "adopted" by the Goslee family and living in their home off and on while researching his topic did make things easier for MacLean. I tend to believe in kismet, so for me, it was MacLean's destiny to retell this dark story. Victims and killers alike do seem to call from beyond the grave, whispering a request for their stories to be told. It has to be fulfilling for MacLean to know not only did he write an Edgar Award winning book originally, he has now delivered a thoughtfully written behind-the-scenes look at his fortunate journey. This book is a quick read, one which gives the reader even better insight into the people who were terrorized by McElroy for far too many years. Be warned though. You'll find yourself rereading In Broad Daylight quickly after as The Story Behind leaves you wanting more. I quite fancy MacLean's writing and hope he will continue to find fascinating stories to share. If only we could have met in that time and place. Another story behind the story? Perhaps.

Great backstory Read

In Broad Daylight is a great read but in some ways the backstory is even more compelling. I was fascinated by the educated, urbanite writer's challenging and at at times scary efforts to win the confidence of the locals, especially McElroy's hunting and drinking buddies. The author's writing and diligence is in the same class as Capote's classic. . Highly recommended.
