It moves with a quiet, inexorable piling up of incidents that eventually make clear to the audience who is guilty of the murder about which the action hinges. Miss Glaspell belongs to that group of playwriters of which Eugene O'Neill is the foremost example. Naturalism is their object. There must be no melodramatics.
The satiric vein of Miss Glaspell may be found in such plays as ‘Woman’s Honor’ and ‘Close the Book.’ ‘Close the Book,’ which satirizes the desire to be anything but conservative and as other folk are, is delicious in its implications…. Miss Glaspell's style is entertaining and easy to read.”—The New York Times
Of course, this Times review was written long before the fairly recent renewed interest in Glaspell’s work as a subject of literary scholarship. Her plays amuse on the level noted in the review but also stand out as appropriate subjects for academic literary and cultural fields.

Worth paying $5 to get a copy of A Jury of Her Peers

The plays weren't the attraction of this book for me and I admit to giving up before I finished even one.
Glaspell's wonderful short story, A Jury of Her Peers, is the star of this volume and makes it a worthwhile purchase for it alone. Glaspell is renowned for this story and for good reason. The prose shimmers, the images stay in the mind for weeks, months and even longer. The big and small questions about loyalty, honesty, generosity, neighbourliness, spousal violence and the different ways men and women see the world outshadow the more mundane questions of a run of the mill crime story - who did what and why.
My only criticism is that I'd like to have bought A Jury of Her Peers as part of anthology of short stories available in ebook - sadly, the print copy I own isn't available for purchase electronically.
