Death, Life, or Love—Unbounded Always Play for Keeps
There are only two ways to kill Unbounded, and fire isn’t one of them—as law school dropout Erin Radkey learns the hard way. By fluke of a recessive gene, she has become Unbounded, a nearly immortal being with paranormal abilities.
Erin’s Change separates her from her loved ones and alters everything she believes to be true. A week earlier she was considering a marriage proposal; now she contemplates the best way to stay alive. Caught in a battle between two Unbounded groups, the Emporium and the Renegades, she is also hunted by a secret mortal society sworn to eradicate the Unbounded gene.
As Erin plunges into this dangerous new life, she must carve out her own place in the madness, protect her mortal family, and decide which group she should join. Her unique ability is vital to both groups in the race to secure an identification software that spells death for all Unbounded—or enslavement for the entire mortal world. Some will stop at nothing to use Erin as one more pawn in a battle that has spanned centuries. Erin’s undeniable attraction to Ritter Langton, whose family was massacred by opposing Unbounded two hundred and forty years ago, complicates her choices. There are no second chances. Death, life, or love—Unbounded always play for keeps.
Non-stop action, terrifying consequences, and powerful romance make The Change an exciting addition to the world of romantic urban fantasy.

Review
"Enough paranoid twists and turns to keep the reader turning pages . . . the author has clearly thought through the nuances of the story's theme and engineered a few surprising plot twists that elevate it . . . above the level of the average thriller." -Publishers Weekly
About the Author
Teyla Branton grew up avidly reading science fiction and fantasy and watching Star Trek reruns with her large family. They lived on a little farm where she loved to visit the solitary cow and collect (and juggle) the eggs, usually making it back to the house with most of them intact. On that same farm she once owned thirty-three gerbils and eighteen cats, not a good mix, as it turns out. Teyla always had her nose in a book and daydreamed about someday creating her own worlds. She is now married, mostly grown up, and has seven kids, including a two-year-old, so life at her house can be very interesting (and loud), but writing keeps her sane. She thrives on the energy, inspiration, and daily amusement offered by her children. Grabbing any snatch of free time from her hectic life, Teyla writes novels, often with a child on her lap. She loves guns, martial arts, and belly dancing. Teyla writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and science fiction. She also writes romance and romantic suspense under the name Rachel Branton. A Rich & Satisfying Read
By Jane Hoagland
Excellent book! Well written, no grammer issues, and though there is a lot of action with the ongoing conflict between the three groups, the starring role in this novel is the relationships between people. The author effectively brings out how unexpectedly developing unique abilities impacts the family and the community as well as the individual. The character development impresses me. These fictional people and their relationships are drawn so realistically, I visualize them as I read.
The plot is multifaceted with plenty of discoveries and surprises revealed one by one, from the first chapter through to the last. Plus, there's no gratuitous graphic sex. Graphic sex in a novel is like candy floss: fluffy, showy, colourful, takes up a lot of space, but actually just full of air. This story is more like a ten-course meal: paranormal talents, family, friends, some romance, team work, loss, tremendous challenges, prejudice, altruistic people, and power hungry people--a rich and satisfying novel. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Bon Appetit!

A great book
By Thunder
I really enjoyed reading this story. The characters are well developed and the world building helps the reader further understand the characters motivations. The main character, Erin , is strong female that has some reservations about her new life changes. It is wonderful to have a paranormal story that is not either all romance or action/adventure but has both qualities. I look forward to seeing more from this author.

Hits and misses, but generally enjoyable
By Nepenthe
I enjoyed reading this story, but I also had some issues with it.
First of all, the good points:
-- It's really nice to see this sort of story play out with an older-than-teenaged protagonist. While the story does have a bit of a young adult feel (which is not a bad thing in its own right), I think that just lends itself all the better to exploring a concept a lot of books aimed at adults might be hesitant to explore.
-- The writing itself is nicely done. In general I liked Erin's character voice, the settings were very well-described without bogging down the narrative, and characters who were meant to be sympathetic were really darn sympathetic.
-- I also - in general - appreciated the protagonist's character development, how easily she took to people, and how she didn't make many judgements about other characters, merely accepting them instead.
-- The author clearly has a big world in mind and has done a good job of developing it. It definitely feels like there's still more to it than what you're seeing even BESIDES being told as much directly, and I can only hope that future installments have kept the world as open and elaborated further on its depth.
The less good points, some of which might be more like personal quibbles:
-- In spite of featuring a cast of older characters (well, I mean, of course they're older considering their condition, but I guess I mean like their physical age), several of them and especially the protagonist often read like they were much younger or not as much in control of themselves as one might expect for adults+. Most everyone in the know condescended pretty heavily to the protagonist and absolutely refused to communicate openly in order to avoid sometimes fatal problems.
-- Maybe this is what adults look for in books, but there was such a heavy focus on the lust that characters felt for each other that it became a little disconcerting. At one point, because the statistics for the likelihood of a favorable birth were so specifically mentioned, and then because Erin seemed to be falling for literally every guy, I was highly concerned that her ability was going to be "she has an Unbounded baby without fail every time" and that was going to be how the story evolved. It wasn't! I was relieved. But it was off-putting.
-- A few other reviews have mentioned that there was a marked slowdown after a certain point, and I feel like a large part of that issue was due to plot congestion. A good bet would have been to have the "Rengades vs. Emporium with effects on family" plot OR "Emporium + lineage" plot OR the "Halden technology trade" plot, but with so many overlapping threads there was only ever just enough time for the characters to react to whatever plot event had just happened before moving onto the next plot-important development. It wasn't poorly written, but it was dense, so I can understand why it became an issue for some folks.
All in all, like I said, I did enjoy the story! And I'd like for others to read it, because I think there's a lot there TO enjoy. The issues *I* had might not be issues for other people, and might be the very things they like about what they've read, but I did feel that they were worth mentioning. Either way, give this one a chance if you're into the genre(s) and looking for a new read.
