"Johnny Got His Gun," by Dalton Trumbo, is a powerful novel. The Bantam paperback includes a fascinating introduction by Trumbo, written in 1959 with a 1970 addendum. The intro notes that the novel itself was written in 1938 and published just after the start of World War II. An "About the Author" page at the book's beginning notes that the Colorado-born Trumbo was one of the screenwriters blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

"Johnny" tells the story of Joe Bonham, an American soldier who is horrifically wounded and disabled in World War I. The book is told from Joe's perspective as he struggles to understand and cope with his situation. Dalton's prose style in this book made a strong impact on me. At times he seems to be assaulting the reader without mercy as he shows us the horror of war and its terrible human cost. But the book also includes passages of hope, triumph, and heartbreaking beauty. Joe is an unforgettable character, and this truly disturbing book remains a profoundly relevant work of American fiction.

Should be REQUIRED reading for every American.

I read this book first almost 25 years ago, when in my early twenties. Recently, I nagged a friend into reading it, and decided to again read the whole book to determine if the considerable effect it had on me in the 70s was simply a reflection of my age at the time.
It wasn't.
The book is still as powerful as it ever was. I do not see how anyone can read this and not be profoundly affected. A line in the synopsis on Amazon.com indicates the book was written about World War I. Actually, no specific war is ever mentioned - only the initial publishing date would infer that. Rather than 1939, it could have been written in 1959, 1969, or even 1869 - war is war and only the technology changes.
The copy I have has an addendum dated 1970 by the author. Read it - it enforces the notion of the waste of war.
If I were a high school English teacher, my seniors would HAVE to read this to graduate. Same if I were a college professor. But even more than that, this should be required reading for ANY politician at the national level.
Rereading this book at the age of 46 has not changed my opinion - absolutely no other piece of literature has had such a profound effect on my life.
Buy it, read it - then pass it on.

There was a time when war was still noble and ticker tape fell freely on the heads of veterans; our American heroes. There was an era in US history when wars ended with extravagant parades while lovers were reunited after years apart. Dalton Trumbo's chilling novel, Johnny Got His Gun, is about that era--but there are no heroes here. This tale has nothing to do with the romantic homecomings and thrilling American victories. Johnny Got His Gun is about the atrocious reality behind the glitzy Hollywood definition of warfare. Set during World War I, Trumbo's novel tells the story of a brutally injured and disabled man. Isolation has never known such lonliness. The main character, Joe Boeham, describes himself as the "living dead man." He has no arms, no legs, no face, no tongue to speak, no ears to hear, and no eyes to see. This book is the thoughts of Joe Boeham, slipping in and out of time. He describes his past and you can feel the despair in him as he describes his present; his future. The authour's lack of punctuation gives the reader the notion that Joe Boeham has simply a string of thoughts; beginning nowhere and refusing to end. Boeham's goal in life is merely to live. No, not to breathe, not simply to have a steady heartbeat but rather to find in himself some remaining human characteristic. Lying beneath the surface, Dalton Trumbo incorporates Boeham's opinions regarding the draft, warfare in general, and fighting for a word: democracy. A thought provoking, page-turner, Johnny Got His Gun, is not a book you'll soon forget. This is a masterpiece that has touched the masses helping in the struggle to end the glorification of war.

Horrible editing

The premise of this novel was interesting and timely. However, the editing of the story was childish in nature -- I felt like I was reading a book written by a 4th or 5th grader.

I would not recommend this book unless the publisher has corrected all of the grammar, spelling, punctuation, and blatant writing errors currently present.

Not as interesting as I thought

The book is just not as interesting as the "advert" would lead you to believe. I like bio-medical thrillers but this isn't one of them. I could tell that English is a second language for the author before even looking. I got the "new and improved" version in June, 2013 and let me tell you it must have really been bad, because there are still TONS and TONS of grammatical and punctuation errors! I read the free Kindle version; don't waste any money on it.

Super great book, user friendly, easy to understand, easy to modify and perform no matter where one resides. It was very enlightening and comforting. I'm not knowledgeable about wicca or spells, but I found this book to be very helpful, easy to understand and packed with information!

Simple and right to the point! I love it! I recommend this book to everyone. Great book! Whether your looking for spells covering topics such as Love, Money, Health, Protection, Diet, Confidence, Binding, Energy and much more, you'll have no problem finding the spells you need.

What I real like about this book, it is a very practical and hands-on guide. This book is a must read and must buy. I totally recommend this book all the way A+!

If you read The Ultimate Gift, don't waste your time reading The Ultimate Life. I hate to start a review with a negative statement like that, but The Ultimate Life was such a disappointment after reading the first book (and watching the movie). Stovall knew he had a good thing in The Ultimate Gift, so he went back and tried to dip the proverbial bucket in the well - this time it came up dry. Oh, and by the way, this isn't a sequel to the first BOOK...it's a sequel to the movie, so if you read The Ultimate Gift but didn't see the movie, Stovall has changed some characters in this book to correlate to the movie.

In The Ultimate Life, young Jason Stevens is now on trial with his family suing for the billions that Red Stevens bequeathed to young Jason through his will in The Ultimate Gift. The various trials that Jason had to endure to learn life's most valuable lessons, he now has to reiterate and rehash to demonstrate that he, indeed, learned those lessons to the satisfaction of Judge Davis. The story is told through the eyes of Judge Davis and the attempt is made to add suspense and intrigue into the most obvious, least surprising story ever written. Young Jason wins the case, keeps the money, makes a magnanimous gesture to his "family" so they are able to keep their millions and gets married to his wonderful fiancé Alexia (again, from the movie, not the first book) and rides off into the sunset - okay, they don't ride off into the sunset - I guess that was the only thing too cheesy for Stovall in this book.

Good but predictable

The Ultimate Life is largely an elaboration of The Ultimate Gift, in which the author faces off good and evil, but the conflict between the two is one-sided and minimal. The main premise of the book--that a court of law must decide the legitimacy of a billionaire's will--seems flawed because the whole point of the will was that his longtime friend would have the right to decide if the grandson fulfilled its requirements. So to have the outcome subsequently decided "again" through lawyers and ultimately a judge seems somewhat contrived. What should have been on trial was the right of the friend to make the decision. The characters are for the most part one-dimensional...and thus everything about the plot is predictable. Perhaps a good read for middle school and a "feel-good" book with some good examples for all to follow, but lacking in literary depth.

About the Author
Andrea Goldsmith originally trained as a speech pathologist and was a pioneer in the development of communication aids for people unable to speak. Her first novel, GRACIOUS LIVING, was published in 1989, followed by MODERN INTERIORS, then FACING THE MUSIC, UNDER THE KNIFE and THE PROSPEROUS THIEF, which was shortlisted for the 2003 Miles Franklin Award. Fourth Estate published REUNION in 2008. Her literary essays have appeared in HEAT, MEANJIN, AUSTRALIAN BOOK REVIEW, BEST AUSTRALIAN ESSAYS and numerous anthologies. She has taught creative writing throughout Australia, and has mentored several new writers. She lives in inner Melbourne.

Journey of ideas,emotion,drama and music

I love the musicality of her writing. She brought this not only to her description of the music that 1 of her characters plays but also in the description of the monuments she mentions. If you have travelled you will love the bringing to memory her descriptions. Above all I am entralled with the exploration of memory both private and how it is dealt with publicly in monuments. Ask any 2 members of the same family as adults what they remember and you would think they came from different families......
The characters carry all of these ideas and emotions in the narrative and in my book club we all had different favourites and ones that aroused our sympathy.
Ultimately what made this a good read for me was that after I closed the book, I was still thinking about memory and the characters

Great Australian Writing

I have trouble with a lot of Australian Writers. we seem to be good at setting a scene filled with flawed characters and then have nothing much to do with them.
A lot of the genre seems to be over packed with terms and places that are there as markers and to my mind are over egging the Magic Pudding.
I found this book to be what good literature should be. beautifully laid out. Whilst the rest of the cast learned from life .The boy genius Ramsey Blake is locked away from anything other than music.
I loved this book. Andrea Goldsmith has restored my faith in Australian fiction writers

Story ok but constant Anti American Political jabs unnecessary

Story about relationships between people but the author felt it necessary to do political stabs at America throughout the book. While her politics are her opinion, if I wanted to read political opinions I would have picked out a book on politics. It was not the entire book but every few chapters another dig. I was more interested in the storyline as presented in the summary.

The characters in this book hold onto issues for most of their lives that seems to me they would have had that aha moment years before.

It was an ok story but not one I would heartily recommend.

Another winner for Splat!

My daughter and I were thrilled to see a new Splat book out. This time around, Splat has a mystery to solve! Somebody is stealing the ducks his dad made and returning them minus their beaks. Splat and Seymour pack a mystery solving bag and are off to search for clues. The special gadget used to catch the culprit is especially funny - my daughter and I shared a few laughs over that one! The book wraps up with a sweet ending and makes for another Splat the Cat hit!

Another great Splat book

We LOVE Splat the Cat in our house. My son pretends to be a spy, and I thought he would enjoy this book. Once again, Rob Scotton has another great Splat book. My son really enjoyed this book, and I think we read it every night for a week. Can't wait for the next great Splat adventure!

OCD and mental breakdown at its best!

I'm a fan of Stephen King stories adapted by Marvel (The Dark Tower, especially) and this one is great! The mobisodes excellently portrayed OCD and mental breakdown at brilliantly, theatrically, and very realistically. The graphics were gritty, photo-realistic, and added an extra element of chaos, disorder, and the very image of a man (and woman) going crazy, slowly. The graphic novel adaptation, including visual representations of elements in the short story, not included in the mobisodes, captured all of this brilliantly, as well. I say BUY IT! It's a piece of art in and of itself to become a classic years down the road.
