Drawing on interview research conducted with a variety of stakeholders in four donor countries (Denmark, France, Switzerland and the United States) and an extensive review of primary and secondary sources on aid politics in the countries studied, the book offers both a static overview of the characteristics of aid policymaking systems and a historical treatment of policymaking dynamics over a 25-year period (1980-2005).

Applying a common theoretical framework to the four case studies and using development NGO advocacy as a starting point for examining the politics of aid, this book provides a synthesis of several strands of theoretical work dealing with interest group politics and political institutions to inform the analysis of the societal and governmental determinants of aid choices.

Erik Lundsgaarde is Senior Researcher at the German Development Institute (DIE), Bonn, where his work focuses on the diversification of the actor landscape in development cooperation. He is the editor of the book Africa toward 2030: Challenges for Development Policy (2011, Palgrave Macmillan). He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science from the University of Washington, USA.

Sad to read book 3

When the last book was released, I COULD NOT convince myself to start reading it. I wanted to read it because the first two were amazing, but I didn't want the series to be over. I was right, THE BOOK WAS AMAZING! I cried like a baby more than once and couldn't put my Kindle down. I even got in trouble at work for reading on the clock. :)

The first book was a bit odd to adjust to the different "voices", but once I realized the different tones and personalities, it was a smooth reading experience.

Overall, this was SUCH A GOOD SERIES! I only hope to find more books to live up to the thrill from this trilogy.

Wow! I don't know where to begin. I've read the trilogy and all three books were fantastic. The story had me laughing, cheering, crying, rooting them on, yelling, and I was covered in goose bumps a few times. I read hundreds of books a year..HUNDREDS, but none have had me run through the emotional gammet like this. Unique with great detail and you could really feel like your there. This would make a sensational movie in my opinion. It may take some people a few paragraphs to get use to the writing style, but it's smooth sailing after that. I would recommend this book to everyone as it has a little of everything in it.

This is a thrilling exotic sad/ happy love story I as hooked by the first book of the series and re-read it all the time LOVE IT.I wish she would do another book on Catherine and Alek and the crew so we know what happens after they are reunited again my favorite books ever LOVE LOVE

History and historians have not been particularly kind to Thaddeus Stevens, Congressional leader of the Radical Republicans during Reconstruction. Despite a career as a distinguished attorney, Pennsylvania legislator, and entrepreneur, Stevens is remembered more for his desire to punish the former Confederate states before readmitting then to the Union. But the Stevens presented by Trefousse (Historical Dictionary of Reconstruction, Greenwood, 1991) is more of an egalitarian, a great orator, and a staunch opponent of slavery. He was, however, often unsuccessful in achieving his national goals and personal aspirations. Almost 50 years have passed since the last Stevens biography (Fawn Brodie's Thaddeus Stevens: Scourge of the South, LJ 10/15/59), making Trefousse's work an especially valuable addition to Civil War literature. Excellent biography!

Hans L. Trefousse wrote a definitive biography on this great Republican that helped initiated the Reconstruction period after the post-Civil War period. The sub-titled: 19th Century Egalitarian proves to be an aptly named since Stevens proves to be one of the foremost egalitarians of his century. The book clears up the myths and misconceptions that Stevens were often regarded in and set the records straight. Well written, nicely researched and with superbly insights, I can only wished that the book went even deeper into Stevens' life.

The book also goes into Stevens' strengths, weaknesses and his troubles. I thought it was a honest effort on the part of the author to showed the reader the complete man and the account of Stevens' life proves to be balance and fair.

One of the more interesting aspects of this book lies within the struggled between Stevens and Andrew Johnson. The fight between "reconstruction of the south" to the "restoration of the south". This struggle had far reaching consequences in our nation's politics as well as racial relationship. Although product of his time and era, Stevens proves to be far ahead of himself in terms of race relations. It was interesting to learned that his concerns lies not only with the blacks but also toward Indians and Orientals. The book reflects accurately in the end that Stevens was a true egalitarian in the truest form.

Thaddeus Stevens: Complex Man for Comples Times

I want to thank Hans L Tredousse for a remarkable job on the unfolding of the character of one of the most complex individuals I have ever studied. Trefousse does a great job of showing us as much of what is humanly possible to know about Thaddeus Stevens.
By far, Stevens comes alive in the preface of Trefousse'account. The reader is pulled gently into the life of this individal because of the hardships he experienced as a child and because of his determination to see justice prevailed.
As I progressed into the book, I marvelled at both the strengths and weaknesses of this complex man called Thaddeus Stevens. Personally, I think he was a man before his times. It is unfortunate that he considered himself a failure. We have had many presidents in recent years who could not or would not acknowledge that they had achieved anything of "real tangible worth". Stevens comes to the end of life feeling that he had achieved very little of lasting value. It is truly worth lamenting! If Stevens could come back to this century, I think he would be astonished to see what legacy he left the United States and particular minorities who have benefitted much from his efforts to support emancipation and a true Reconstruction for those who had suffered because of slavery.
I was first introduced to Thaddeus Stevens in Lerone Bennett's BEFORE THE MAYFLOWER. I found Stevens to be the underdog, but an all powerful hero for the rights of equality. I think the second best thing to having enjoyed Trefousse' outling the work of Stevens would be to see the book made into historical fiction. Somewhere out there in "fantasy land" is an actor who could bring more to "life" this complex man called Thaddeus Stevens

The plot & events were interesting, but the story moved a bit too fast to the point of skipping information, glossing over things, or using phrases like, "Just like in the movies..." The ending was also quite predictable.

Seeing how this book is pretty new and there are no reviews as of yet I thought I need to let my fellow die-hard Zombie and End-of-the-world dead-head readers just how COOL this book was!!! Yes we have Zombies, blood and gore but this book has brains too(pun intended). I had never heard of this author before and took a chance and was wonderfully entertained from the start to the finish!! I would have gladly paid more for this book but was also happy with the low cost. The cover art is great and will be ck-ing back to see what this NEW Author has next!! After the book was done there was a link to a website you can go and read a short letter, a few years into the future from one of the people in this book. The Author also hints that he may build onto this book with another and I hope he does!!! This is a stand alone novel and I was glad I wouldn't have to wait months or years to find out what happens. I felt fear, happiness and strong emotion while reading this book. The people we get to know were real people and not survival nuts who knew how to shoot 30 different guns and survive on roadkill (haha). They were people just like you and me mixed-up in a world gone mad trying to get home before the ones they love end up eaten or worse. Zombies are not the only things to fear in a dead world.....our fellow man is!!!! Thanks to the Author for time well spent :o) Shawna Jean The Blind Cupid

I can't believe the number of two star reviews.
I think that's a little harsh. This book was very good in its genre, imo.
I thought that this was a very good Zombie novel. Quite original.
The author is a natural story teller, but there are grammar problems.
With the number of people who supposedly vetted this novel, someone should have corrected these errors.
I'm not a grammar nazi, so I'm only subtracting one star.
I found the characters well developed and believable.
The author should try to find a better editor for his next book. His story and his readers deserve it.
I would definitely buy another book by this author.
In my opinion, a well deserved and solid 4 stars.

Lots of twists to keep me reading

I had no trouble turning pages in this entertaining book. The character development was well done so that I cared about each of them. I loved the main character and felt a variety of emotions about the others. Just when I thought I was hoping that things would go a certain way, there was a very believable but unexpected twist. For a while, as the intrigues developed I was swept along with every new twist in the plot. The author kept me guessing right until the end. I enjoyed the mix of romance and adventure and suspense. Well written. This book would make a great movie.

This story makes my life look boring!

This book keeps you guessing right up to the end. Just when I thought I had figured out the mystery and mysterious characters, I was wrong-o. The plot is complex and lost me a time or two but helped me get back on track. The story moves right along and makes one think that one leads a very dull life compared to the characters in the book. But it is all believable.

Move by move along the road to the American Revolution

"The American Revolution: 1763-1783" covers the time frame from the end of the French and Indian Wars to signing of the peace treaty between the British and Americans. The starting point is important because the taxes the Colonists found so burdensome, especially without representation, were primarily designed to have the colonies pay for their own defense. This fifth volume in "The Drama of American History" series aims to give students the "central core" of this period rather than getting bogged down in an overload of information. In other words, authors Christopher and James Lincoln Collier are interested in providing the pageant of American history in "bold strokes."

Consequently, this particular period is covered in six chapters: (1) A Revolution in the Hearts and Minds of Americans begins with the provocative question of whether the revolution was inevitable. The Colliers argue that the great distance between London and the Colonies created an unavoidable conflict between the fact British looked at the Americans as colonists rather than as British citizens and the necessity of the Americans exercising a large degree of autonomy with regards to government because messages back and forth across the Atlantic took months. Given that dynamic, the relationship could not continue forever; (2) The Stamp Act Crisis looks at the first major crisis between the Crown and the Colonies, establishing the quandary faced by the British Parliament, which could neither enforce the Stamp Act nor allow policy to be dictated by what they considered to be a mob. This chapter highlights the potent political rhetoric of James Otis, Patrick Henry, and John Adams in the developing movement towards independence; (3) Taxes and Teas looks at how American attitudes towards Britain continued to evolve in the wake of the Boston Massacre, so that by 1770 any hope of reconciliation between the Crown and the New England colonies was ended and many Americans were now convinced the British Parliament was no longer on their side. The Boston Tea Party in 1773 becomes the spark that ends up triggering the revolution.

The last half of the volume is devoted to the outbreak of actual hostilities: (4) Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill not only relates the details of these early battles in the war for independence, but more importantly shows how they provided evidence that the Colonists could successfully fight the British; (5) The Declaration of Independence actually spends only a few paragraphs discussion the document as an example of practical politics rather than political philosophy. Most of the chapter talks about the lessons George Washington learned from the British evacuation of Boston and the American defeat on Long Island; and (6) The War for American Independence looks at the American Revolution with an emphasis on the chain of events that would lead to the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, looking at those events that improved American morale, thwarted British military plans, and/or encouraged French support. The net effect is to give young readers a real sense of how close this contest was, being so dependent on a key victory here and there, along with a tendency for the British to fail to take advantage of significant opportunities.

One of the strengths of this look at the American Revolution is how the Colliers look at key figures in the struggle from an essentially rhetorical perspective, citing the specific words of Samuel Adams, John Adams, and other Founding Fathers. Talking about the stubbornness of Lord North, the British Prime Minister, also helps young readers be aware of how key figures can have a negative effect on the events of history. This volume does a nice job of structuring events as something like a giant chess game, giving readers a sense of not only what happened but why. This volume is illustrated with historic paintings and etchings (including a few choice political cartoons) as well as contemporary full color photographs of Colonial reenactors. Furthermore, the captions for these photographs are usually quite information, underscoring the idea they are not simply put in the book to give you something to look at besides the text. I do not know if it is practical for many history classes to have a complete set of this series, but I do think the basic approach of "The Drama of American Revolution" is pedagogically sound.

Learned a lot and was entertained too. Surprisingly quick read. The maps are a tremendous help in seeing how the battles played out.
